Canada citizenship test study guide “Discover Canada”

The new Canada citizenship test study guide “Discover Canada” has been issued by the Government of Canada since November 12, 2009.

In essence, this new test guide was issued to tell a more complete story of Canada. Its primary focuses are Canada’s values, symbols, institutions, history and military, as well as a strong emphasis on the rights and responsibilities of citizens. Canadian values, such as democracy, equality of men and women, freedom and human rights, are clearly conveyed. The new guide also emphasizes the native roots of Canada and the different native communities across the country.

This new Canada citizenship test guide has in fact a broader range of information than the old guide. It gives both factual and conceptual understanding of Canada and Canadian citizenship throughout its 10 chapters:
• Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship
• Who We Are
• Canada’s History
• Modern Canada
• How Canadians Govern Themselves
• Federal Elections
• The Justice System
• Canadian Symbols
• Canada’s Economy
• Canada’s Regions

The making of this study guide has involved a lot of experts, including public figures, historians and prominent Canadians. A lot of well-known institutions and organizations also reviewed this study guide before its publication, such as the Institute for Canadian Citizenship and the Historica-Dominion Institute.

This study guide is the one and only guide for the citizenship test. There is no other. This guide should be sent to you by mail from Citizenship and Immigration Canada some time after you apply for your citizenship. You do not need to buy it. Alternatively you can also read it, or listen to it, online, on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website. All the test questions are based on the information provided in this study guide. You do not need to read more Canadian history or geography books.

This knowledge contained in this study guide is one of the requirement to become a Canadian citizen. The Federal government does expect potential citizens to have an adequate knowledge of Canada (geography, culture, symbols, justice system…), but also an adequate knowledge of what it means to be a Canadian. They want to make sure you have a complete picture of your new potential citizenship.

This Canada citizenship test guide seems to give more tools for anybody, including potential citizens, to understand the true meaning of being a Canadian citizen. Would you agree?
